China Pushes Homegrown Character Input Standard for Mobile Phones
October 27, 2006
China's homegrown Chinese character input standard for text messages on mobile phones has gained advocacy of the Ministry of Information Industry. Mobile phone makers and telecoms including Motorola, China Mobile, and China Unicom have been consulted on the new standards. The indigenous input standard includes 27,000 Chinese characters in contrast to the 6,373 supported by the currently most prevalent standard. Domestic mobile phone makers such as Konka, Gionee, and TCL have already begun using this standard.
